Nestled at the foot of Nidderdale and a short stroll into the cathedral city of Ripon, the Pink House is a lovingly restored former Bishops Palace, offering guests relaxed luxury with quirky additions such as home produced honey from the house’s Buckfast bees and eggs from the hens that live in the yew tree in the garden.The Pink house prides itself on locally sourced breakfasts and a relaxed, cosy atmosphere in a house full of historic charm.
Each of the 4 letting rooms is en suite and has a wide range of in room comforts, from L’occitane products and robes, through to home made cake and coffee on arrival. Our thoughtfully designed rooms combine classic charm with modern amenities to ensure a comfortable and memorable stay. The Pink House has a rich history, from a medieval farmstead, a boarding school for clergyman’s sons, through to the first Bishop’s palace in Ripon, the house has strong connections with the Bronte family and Lewis Carroll.

Charlotte Bronte

Patrick Bronte was curate of Haworth church, at the time of the Bronte sisters, Haworth fell under the see of Ripon and was for a time run from Bishopton Grove or as it is now known, the Pink House. Letters from the house to Patrick and Charlotte can be found in the National Archives.

Lewis Carroll

Lewis Carroll has strong links to Ripon, the father of his muse Alice Liddell, attended the house during its time as a boarding school. Lewis is rumoured to have taken tea on the lawn during the house’s time as a private residence in the 1850s.

Charles Longley

Charles Longley was the first Bishop of Ripon and lived in the house for a number of years from 1836. He achieved the position of Archbishop of Canterbury and during his time in Ripon, intervened on behalf of

Henry Liddell

Henry attended Bishopton Grove School in the 1820s, at the time the school was run by a Rev George Weidemann. Henry wrote a memoir about his time at the school which was far from a happy place for him. Henry had ten children, the fourth being Alice Liddell of Alice in Wonderland fame
